A gundog training day with Meurig Rees at Fedw Equestrian Centre on the edge of Epynt Mountains, Llywel Nr Sennybridge LD3 8RG.
Meurig grew up on a farm in west Wales and still has family farming two farms within the Teifi Valley and has always been surrounded by all types of working dogs before finding the retriever side of gundogs some 20 years ago. A Welshman through and through and has Welsh as his first language.
From a young age he has always trained his own dogs and for a few of his friends whilst picking up hints and tips from several of his good trailing friends, although not into the competitive side of gundogs.
He is more into getting dogs trained for the hard work of picking up on several shoots in west Wales throughout the shooting season with plenty of various and natural hard terrain aspects where you have to rely on all the previous training and the natural ability of the dog, especially when they are 50 yards or more and out of sight behind without the ability to stop them and directing to the area and picking up the scent of that bird which has now become a runner, this is now when you have to trust and allow the dog to do what’s it’s been trained for.
Meurig has great experience in hosting training days, particularly for new and novice handlers which he believes is an important part of the structure and is the foundation for both the dog and its owner in their quest to become that team that everyone wants to be like in the shooting field.
Since 2008 he also does numerous gundog displays at various events across Wales including the largest show in the UK & Europe ‘The Royal Welsh Agricultural Show’ in Builth Wells which attracts around 250,000 people over four days, not forgetting to arrange and participate in a gundog display for HRH Princess Anne in 2023.
The day is aimed for novice retrievers 8 months upwards with 1 large paddock and lots of cover in different fields and one thicker rushes field for more experienced training. The day will start with the basics, stop whistle, retriever, healing etc, and then will decide how to continue the day once he has assessed the dogs and handlers’ abilities.
9.30am – The day will start at with a Bacon Roll and Coffee / Tea.
10:00am – 11.30am – A variety of group training exercises.
11.30am – 12:00pm – short break for coffee and cake.
12:00pm – 14:00pm – More training and Is your dog ready for the Game Season.
14:00pm – 15.00pm – finish the day with a 2 course late lunch.
