Join us for an unforgettable weekend of salmon fishing hosted by Marina Gibson at Bywell. This introduction to salmon fishing will cover Spey casting with a double-handed rod, the lifecycle of Atlantic salmon, and key techniques for fishing, handling, and equipment setup—including fly tying and much more.
The Bywell beat on the River Tyne runs through the stunning Allendale Estate. Spanning 3 miles, this beat features 15 named pools, fished both from the bank and by wading. While spinning is allowed in certain pools or during high water, fly fishing is encouraged—and with good reason. The Bywell pools are ideal for fly fishing, with the majority of fish caught each season taken on the fly. Thanks to the efforts of the Environment Agency and Tyne Rivers Trust, the Tyne system continues to improve in water quality and spawning habitats, resulting in healthy runs of salmon, grilse, and sea trout in both quantity and size.
At the heart of our fishing experience is Millers Hut, a charming and well-equipped retreat just outside Bywell village. Nestled on the banks of the River Tyne, the hut offers beautiful views over Millers Pool—a perfect spot to relax over lunch or take a well-earned break. Inside, you’ll find cosy seating, a wood burner, a fully equipped kitchen, and all the essentials to keep you comfortable. A car park is conveniently located next to the hut, along with a serviced portaloo. The hut also has a small fridge/cooler for food and drinks, as well as crockery, cutlery, and refreshments—so there’s always a cup of tea or coffee waiting for you!
