I made a huge mistake years ago with a waterproof jacket, and I’m here to share my wisdom so you don’t repeat it!
It was the depths of December, and I was standing in a field, flag in hand, with my dog by my side, waiting for the guns to line out. Then, the heavens opened, and water seeped through my previously trustworthy jacket, leaving me drenched and shivering for the rest of the day. Since then, I learned how to properly maintain my waterproof clothing to ensure it continues to do its job and lasts longer.
1. Always check the care label
Waterproof clothing often features special coatings or membranes (such as Gore-Tex), and each material may have specific care instructions. The golden rule? Avoid washing your waterproof garments too often, especially important is to avoid non-specialised detergent. Overwashing can wear down the waterproof treatment. When a clean is necessary, use a gentle, non-bio-dedicated detergent. Regular detergents contain harsh chemicals and fabric softeners that can damage the water-repellent layer.
2. Drying techniques
Where possible, air-dry your waterproof garments. However, some materials can be tumble-dried on a low heat setting if required. The heat even helps to re-activate some membranes such as the Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating. If your clothing stops beading water on the surface, it’s a sign that it’s time to reproof. Reproofing sprays or wash-in treatments specifically designed for waterproof gear can be easily purchased.
3. Proper storage
Don’t forget to store your waterproof clothing correctly. Hanging it up in a dry, cool place is best. Folding or crushing the fabric during storage can weaken it or damage the waterproof membrane.
By following the appropriate steps and knowing the material that makes up your garments, you’ll keep your waterproof clothing in top condition, ensuring you stay dry and comfortable on many more outings to come.
