Wild and Untamed

Out here, hunting isn’t about bragging rights; it’s about showing up. It’s about learning the rhythm of the land, honouring the animals that roam it, and carrying on a genuine tradition in a world that often forgets what “real” truly means.

We don’t just hunt to hunt. We hunt because it’s in our bones. Because our ancestors did it before us, and survived harsh winters on the food they provided. Where “field to fork” really began.

More Than the Kill

Let’s get one thing straight – deer hunting isn’t about taking down a trophy buck. It’s about connection. Connection to nature, to tradition, to our roots. It’s engrained in our DNA to live off the land. When you’re out there in the stillness, heart pounding as a shadow moves through the trees, you feel every part of yourself come alive.

It teaches patience. It teaches respect. It reminds you that we’re not separate from the wild, but a part of it. Watching the sunrise over frost-covered fields is a blessing in itself whether you had a successful hunt or not it’s a beautiful experience.

People love to stereotype a country girl – say she’s just a pretty face in boots. But they’ve never watched her climb into a stand with her pack slung low and her confidence riding high. They’ve never seen the look in her eyes when she spots movement through the trees or the steady hands she keeps when it’s time to pull the trigger.

A girl who hunts knows who she is. She’s learned self-reliance, humility, and the raw kind of gratitude you can only find when you’ve worked for what you put on your table.

I work with the Country Food Trust who provide meals for the homeless using venison as a great source of protein. It’s the perfect match – the land is managed and people are fed.

More than a rifle

Let’s talk gear. We fine-tune our equipment, sight in with precision, and walk into the woods prepared both physically and mentally. Every hunter has their own setup. The important part is knowing your gear, practicing often, and never taking a shot you can’t back up. Safety is paramount.

We are tough. We haul gear, drag deer, hike miles of terrain, and do it all with our hair in a braid and mud on our boots.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the feel of a rifle in my hands and the way a good scope locks in on a moment but deer hunting – real hunting isn’t just about the shot. It’s about getting out there before the rest of the world wakes up, heart pounding with every crunch of a twig underfoot.

It’s the stillness, the waiting, the respect. It’s learning to move like the trees and listen like the wind. It’s hours of nothing, and then a second of everything. There’s beauty in that discipline. Strength, too.

Respecting the Land

Every true hunter knows the importance of conservation. We don’t just take from the land – we give back. That means knowing the rules, respecting the seasons, taking ethical shots, and using every part of the animal we can. I embarked a few years ago on a trip to eat the animal and also use the fur for a one of kind gun slip and cartridge bag and I remember that hunt every time I take it out. It’s so special to me.

Deer hunting is a delicate balance. Too many, and the population suffers. Too few, and the ecosystem shifts. Hunters play a vital role in managing wildlife, and we take that responsibility seriously.

A Call to the Next Generation

If you’re a country girl thinking about getting into deer hunting, do it. Don’t wait. Find someone who knows the ropes, ask questions, enrol on courses and hit the woods. The woods don’t care how much you know yet – they’ll teach you. The deer won’t wait for you to be perfect – they’ll challenge you. You’ll find more than just deer tracks – you’ll find confidence, strength, and a new way of seeing the world.

And to the seasoned huntresses out there – keep passing it down. Teach your children, your family, your friends. Share the stories, and the heart behind the hunt.

Final Thoughts

Deer hunting is a tradition, a passion, and a way of life. For country folk, it’s where we find peace, purpose, and pride. It’s a story of grit and grace with a deep connection to the land. Whether you’re sitting in a tree with the wind howling or cleaning your gear after a long day, remember: this life isn’t just about taking aim. It’s about staying grounded, staying wild, and always honoring the hunt.

For everyone who’s ever tracked through the mud, waited in the cold, or whispered prayers of thanks under a setting sun – this life is ours. And it’s beautiful.

Hunt proud, hunt humble, and hunt with heart.

Here’s to the country girls who hunt – may your boots be muddy, your aim be true, and your freezer full!
