About

Cold game simulated shoot day designed for novice handlers or novice dogs who are ready to take it to the next step of training. This day is designed for handlers wanting to learn about working their dog on shoots.

No previous shoot day experience required.

A friendly relaxed day with some fantastic training grounds. Tea and coffee on arrival, a beginners demonstration and an informative talk on various shoot topics including different types of shooting, people’s jobs on shoots and our dog’s jobs on shoots. Then out into the field for a beating line exercise and a picking up exercise, followed by a mixed exercise combining hunting/ steadiness and retrieving. There will be gun shots throughout of all these ever exercises to help dogs gain confidence around live shots. There will also be a prize at the end of the session for the most improved handler.

Itinerary

9:00 – Meet in the farmyard with tea and coffee and a bacon sandwich supplied by us on arrival.

9:30-10:30 – In a farm building we will provide a talk through, etiquette, terminology, types of shooting, people on shoots, jobs on shoots, and dogs jobs on shoots. This is an interactive session, so your participation is key.

11:00 – 12.30 – Line walking exercise. This will take place in the open on grassland (sounds easy). Dogs will need to be kept close and under control. This is to simulate a beating line/walking gun line. There will be no retrieves in this exercise

12:30 – 13:00 – Lunch – We provide Tea/Coffee and cold drinks. You will need to bring a packed lunch.

13:00 – 14:30 – A picking-up exercise. We will be stood patiently, again with dogs under control. Whilst we are standing, we will fire a number of gunshots at a distance. Upon completion of the gunshots, we will identify the locations of cold game. There will be a mixture of blind retrieves and marked retrieves.

Dogs and handlers can retrieve the cold game from rough grass/bog land/scrub land with various trees and bushes. This exercise is to replicate the steadiness required during the drive and hunting/game-finding ability after the drive.

We will demonstrate humane dispatch in this exercise using cold game.

14:30-16:00 – For the final exercise we will put the 2 together and push a block of cover through as beaters. Fingers crossed there will be live birds flushed. Whilst we are pushing through the cover there will be several gunshots fired. Once we have pushed the cover through there will be cold game to retrieve from behind the gun line. These retrieves will be unseen. We will be able to identify areas where the game is located.
